OCSPCA Assistance Program

Animal Safe House

Sad PuppyThe OCSPCA provides temporary refuge for pets of victims of domestic violence.  Because animals are family members, victims of domestic violence can be reluctant to leave their pets behind to enter the safety of a domestic violence shelter.

The OCSPCA will work with victims and their case workers to develop a plan to assist with boarding animals while a victim receives treatment and assistance for domestic violence.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:

  • — 52% of victims in shelters leave their pets with their batterers
  • — 71 % of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets
  • Up to 40% of domestic violence victims remain in abusive relationships, because they cannot find alternative living situations for their pets
  • In 2004, only 12% of domestic violence programs had pet sheltering capabilities

If you or or someone you know needs help housing their pets while seeking shelter from domestic violence, please ask that person’s case worker or advocate to contact us at (714) 964-4445 or info@orangecountyspca.org.

Your donations help the OCSPCA provide a safe place for animals to live while their owners receive assistance in a domestic violence shelter.  Working hand and hand with the domestic violence shelters in Orange County, pet owners of domestic violence can have peace of mind that their pets are safe while they work toward providing a safe environment for themselves, their children and the animals in their lives.
